About the Event

Our good friend and mentor, Prof Abi Hunt will share her extensive knowledge of Lincoln through the Medieval period.

Lincoln was an important city in medieval England for a number of reasons, including its role in trade, its castle, and its cathedral:

  • Trade

Lincoln was a major trading center in the Viking period, and had its own mint that was comparable to York's by the end of the 10th century.

  • Castle

Lincoln Castle was built by William the Conqueror in 1068 on the site of a Roman fortress. It was a strategically important stronghold that withstood a siege during the First Barons' War in 1217. The castle also served as a royal mint during the medieval period.
