About the Event
Norman French had a significant impact on the English language, including:
Borrowed words: An estimated 10,000 French words were adopted into English during Norman rule, and about three-fourths of them are still used today.
Grammar: English grammar was influenced by Norman French, including the borrowing of French words, prefixes, and suffixes.
Language use: After the Norman invasion, the aristocracy used Latin or Norman French instead of Old English. The clergy used Latin, while merchants and the ruling class used French.
Language merging: Over time, the two languages merged to create a new one.
